Le martyrologe romain
fait mémoire, le 14 avril, de la bienheureuse religieuse espagnole, Isabelle
Calduch Rovira, vierge et martyre (+1937).
Elle était née en
Catalogne, à Alcalá de Chivert, dans le diocèse de Tortosa et la province de
Castellon de la Plana, le 9 mai 1882, dans une famille de cinq enfants.
Des voisins ont témoigné:
"Elle a vécu son enfance dans une atmosphère très chrétienne, notamment
par la charité envers les plus pauvres. Avec une amie, elle allait ainsi porter
à manger à une dame âgée, et elle l'aidait aussi pour sa toilette et le ménage
de sa maison."
Elle pensait au mariage
avec un jeune de sa ville, lui aussi catholique engagé, quand elle entendit
l'appel du Christ à le suivre de plus près. Son frère José a témoigné de
sa liberté totale: "C'est la vocation seule qui a poussé ma soeur à entrer
en religion."
Et elle entra, avec le
consentement de ses parents, chez les Clarisses capucines de Castellon de
la Plana: elle prit l'habit en 1900, à dix-huit ans. L'année suivante, elle
prononça ses voeux temporaires, et ses voeux perpétuels le 30 mai 1904, à 22
ans.
Ses compagnes la
décrivent ainsi: "Elle était d'un tempérament pacifique et aimable,
toujours joyeuse. C'était une religieuse exemplaire. Toujours contente.
Observant attentivement les Règles et les Constitutions. Regard modeste, parole
prudente, prompte au renoncement, spécialement pour les repas. Elle était
estimée de toute la communauté. C'était une âme à la vie intérieure intense,
avec une grande dévotion pour le Saint-Sacrement, la Vierge Marie et saint Jean
Baptiste."
On lui confia la charge
de maîtresse des novices. Elle se distingua par son zèle et sa justice, sans
manifester de préférence entre les novices.
"Je me suis faite
religieuse pour mieux servir Dieu, disait-elle. Dieu nous appelle sur le chemin
de la sainteté".
Mais la persécution
anti-catholique qui a accompagné la Guerre civile espagnole obligea le
monastère à fermer ses portes. Isabelle se réfugia chez son frère prêtre, Mosen
Manuel, à Alcala de Chivert, et elle y vécut retirée, dans la prière.
Mais elle fut rattrapée
par les violences: le 13 avril 1937, elle fut arrêtée par des miliciens en même
temps que le P. Manuel Geli, un franciscain.
Ils furent conduits
devant le Comité local d'Alcala de Chivert, où ils furent injuriés et
maltraités. Elle fut finalement assassinée près du cimetière de Cuevas de
Vinroma, dans la région de Castellon. Elle avait 54 ans. Elle mourut, comme
elle avait vécu, "pour le Christ Epoux", selon l'expression du
martyrologe romain.

Joséphine (Josefina) Calduch naquit à Alcala de Chivert en Espagne, le 9
mai 1882, dernière de cinq enfants. Elle vécut une enfance profondément
chrétienne. Jeune fille avec une amie, elle s'occupait de visiter des personnes
âgées et s'occupait en particulier d'une vieille voisine. Elle fut courtisée
par un jeune homme, droit et catholique comme elle, mais elle préféra, avec le
consentement de ses parents, embrasser la vie religieuse. Elle entra donc chez
les Capucines de Castillon de la Plana, prenant l'habit en 1900.
Elle émit sa profession temporaire en 1901, sous le nom de soeur Isabelle, et
sa profession perpétuelle en 1904. Ses consoeurs la décrivirent comme une
religieuse aimable, de caractère pacifique, toujours joyeuse et exemplaire.
Elle observait la Règle avec respect, tenait à la modestie du regard et à la
prudence des paroles. Elle était en fait animée d'une profonde vie intérieure
et était dévouée à l'adoration du Saint Sacrement, ainsi qu'à la prière envers
la Sainte Vierge et saint Jean-Baptiste qu'elle aimait particulièrement. Elle
devint maîtresse des novices, les guidant avec zèle vers l'observance de la vie
franciscaine. Elle ne faisait pas de distinction envers les novices. A la
veille de la guerre civile, elle fut encore élue comme maîtresse des novices.
Lorsque les événements obligèrent la communauté à se disperser pendant l'été
1936, elle partit pour Alacala de Chivert où vivait son frère, prêtre, l'abbé
Mosen-Manuel Calduch qui fut assassiné plus tard par les révolutionnaires. Elle
vécut dans sa ville natale dans la réclusion volontaire et la prière.
Après la mort de son frère, elle partit se cacher chez son autre frère,
Francisco. Le 13 avril 1937, elle fut arrêtée par un groupe de miliciens, avec
le Père Manuel Geli, Franciscain. Ils furent conduits tous les deux au
comité révolutionnaire local pour être interrogés, injuriés et maltraités comme
Notre Seigneur devant la foule et le Sanhédrin. On la fusilla dans le village
de Cuevas, le lendemain, 14 avril.
En cette semaine de Pâques, prions pour nos persécuteurs, qu'ils soient
éclairés par la lumière de la résurrection.

In 1900, with the
blessing of her parents, Josephine Calduch Rovira gave up the love of a
wonderful young man from her village, whom she had been dating for a while, to
embrace the love of a greater Spouse, Jesus, the Crucified Christ as a Capuchin
Poor Clare Nun at the Monastery of Castellon de la Plana. She had been born on
the 9th of May, 1882 in the Valencia village of Alcalá de Chivert. Her parents
Francisco Claduch Roures and Amparo Rovira Marti raised her and her four older
brothers and sisters in a very Christian atmosphere and, even as a young
teenager, together with a friend, she used visit an old lady in the village,
taking her her meals and helping her bathe and to clean her house.
As a Capuchin Poor Clare
she was known by her religious name, Sister Isabel, and made her first
Profession on the the 28th of April 1901. Sister Isabel made her Perpetual
Profession on the 30th of May 1904 and her faithfulness to the Rule and
Constitutions were was noted by her fellow Sisters. She was fulfilled the
office of Novice Mistress with great zeal, encouraging her novices to
faithfully live their Poor Clare life. She was never prone to
favouritism but treated all the novices equally. She maintained custody of the
eyes, was self-disciplined when it came to eating and, when speaking, always
exercised great prudence. She led an intense prayer life and her favorite
devotions were devotion to the Blessed Sacrament, devotion to Our Lady and
devotion to Saint John the Baptist.
With the outbreak of the
Spanish Revolution she took refuge in her home village where she had brother
who was a priest. He was later murdered. In her house in the village she led a
life of prayer and contemplation until she was arrested, together with a Friar
Minor, on the 13th of April, 1937. The militiamen who arrested them brought
them before the local Committee of Alcalá de Chivert where they were badly
treated and injured before being killed at Cuevas de Vinromá in Castellon,
Spain, and buried in the local cemetery.

Josefina Calduch Rovira
was born in Alcalá de Chivert, in the diocese of Tortosa and the province of
Castellón de la Plana, on 9 May 1882. Her parents were Francisco Calduch Roures
and Amoparo Rovira Martí. Josefina was the last of five children. Her
acquaintances said of her, “During her childhood she life in a very Christian
atmosphere. She showed charity to the needy even then. With a friend, she used
to take meals to an old woman and helped her with her personal cleaning and
with cleaning the house.” During her youth she knew a very Christian young man
of the town. She interrupted her relationship with him to embrace a more
perfect state of life, with the consent of her parents. She entered the Poor
Clare Monastery in Castellón de la Plana, receiving the habit in 1900.
Her brother José said,
“Her vocation was the only reason she entered the monastery.” She made
temporary vows on 28 April 1901 and perpetual vows on 30 May 1904. Her sisters
say, “She had a peaceable and amiable temperament, always joyful. She was an
exemplary religious, always content. She was very observant of the Rule and
Constitutions. She was very modest with her eyes, prudent in her speech and
very mortified, especially in regard to meals. She was highly regarded by the
community. She led an intense interior life and was very devoted to the Blessed
Sacrament, to the Blessed Virgin and to Saint John the Baptist.” In the monastery
she was novice mistress, a task she “did with great zeal so that the
novices would be observant religious. She made no distinction between the
novices,” recalled Sister Micaela. She was re-elected for another three years,
a term she did not complete because of arrival of the revolution. At its
outbreak, Sister Isabel went to Alcalá de Chivert (Castellón) where she had a
brother a priest, Mosén Manuel. He too will be killed later.
During this time in her
home town she dedicated herself to recollection and prayer. Together with Fr.
Manuel, a Franciscan friary, she was arrested there on 13 April 1937 by a group
of militiamen. Both were led to the local Committee of Alcalá de Chivert, and
suffered injuries and maltreatment. She was killed in the district of Cuevas de
Vinromá (Castellón) and buried in its cemetery.

Her neighbors say that,
“She was brought up in a very religious atmosphere, and even as a child she
would practice charity to the needy. She and a friend would take food to an old
lady and help her keep the house clean.” In her youth she was involved with a
very religious local young man but with her paents’ consent she broke off the
relationship in order to embrace a more perfect state of life. She was born at
Alcala de Chivert, in the diocese of Tortosa and the province of Castellon de
Plana on May 9, 1882. Her parents were Francisco Calduch and Amparo Rovira
Marti. They had five children and Isabel was the youngest.
She entered the Capuchin
Poor Clare Monastery at Castellon de la Plana and was clothed in 1900. Her
brother Jose says that “His sister’s motive in entering religious life was
purely and simply that she had a vocation.” She made simple profession on April
28, 1901, and made perpetual vows on May 30, 1904.
The sisters say “She had
a peaceful, kindly temperament and was always cheerful. She was an exemplary
religious always content, very observant of the Rule and Constitutions. She

In the monastery, she

While staying in her village she devoted herself to seclusion and prayer. She was arrested on April 13, 1937, together with Fr. Manuel Geli, a Franciscan, by a group of militia. Both were taken before the local committee at Alacala de Chivert. She was martyred in the district of Cuevas de Vinroa (Castellon), where she was buried in the cemetery.
Blessed Isabel Calduch
Rovira of the Franciscan Capuchin Poor Clares is one of the thousands of
Priests, religious brothers and nuns martyred during the Spanish Civil War in
1936 for the hatred of the Faith. She and other Capuchin martyrs were beatified
by Pope John Paul II on March 11, 2001 along with 240 other martyrs.

Isabella Calduch Rovira, vergine dell’Ordine delle Clarisse Cappuccine e
martire, che, in tempo di persecuzione contro la fede, morì per Cristo Sposo.
Nacque ad Alcalá de
Chivert, diocesi di Tortosa e provincia di Castellón de la Plana, il 9 maggio
1882. Suoi genitori furono D. Francisco Calduch Roures e Donna Amparo Rovira
Martí. Da loro nacquero cinque figli, l’ultima dei quali fu Isabel. I suoi
vicini dicono di lei: “Durante la sua infanzia visse in un ambiente molto
cristiano. Esercitò in quel tempo la carità verso i bisognosi. Essa stessa con
un’amica andava a portare a mangiare ad un’anziana, che aiutava anche per la
pulizia personale e la pulizia della casa”. Durante la giovinezza ebbe
relazione con un giovane del luogo, molto cristiano; relazione che essa poi
interruppe per abbracciare uno stato di vita più perfetto, sempre con il
consenso dei suoi genitori. Entrò nel monastero delle Cappuccine di Castellón
de la Plana vestendo l’abito nel 1900. Dice suo fratello José: “Solo la
vocazione fu il motivo che indusse la sorella a entrare in religione”. Emise la
professione temporanea il 28 aprile 1901 e quella perpetua il 30 maggio 1904.
Dicono le religiose: “Era di temperamento pacifico e amabile, sempre gioiosa.
Era una religiosa esemplare. Sempre contenta. Molto osservante delle Regole e
delle Costituzioni. Molto modesta negli occhi, prudente nel parlare e molto
mortificata. Molto mortificata nei pasti; sempre molto stimata dalla comunità.
Era un’anima d’intensa vita interiore, molto devota del Santissimo, della
Vergine e di san Giovanni Battista”. Nel monastero disimpegnò l’incarico di
Maestra delle novizie, “facendolo con molto zelo affinché fossero religiose
osservanti; non facendo distinzioni fra le novizie”, dice di lei Suor Micaela.
Fu rieletta per un altro triennio, che non arrivò a completare per il
sopravvenire della rivoluzione. Allo scoppio della rivoluzione Suor Isabel andò
ad Alcalá de Chivert (Castellón), dove aveva un fratello sacerdote, Mosén
Manuel, che poi sarà ucciso. Durante la permanenza nel suo paese si dedicò al
ritiro e alla preghiera. Lì sarebbe arrestata il 13 aprile 1937 da un gruppo di
miliziani, insieme a P. Manuel Geli, francescano. Condotti tutt’e due al
Comitato locale di Alcalá de Chivert, furono ingiuriati e maltrattati. Fu
uccisa nel distretto di Cuevas de Vinromá (Castellón), nel cui cimitero fu
anche sepolta.

Breve Biografia
Nació en Alcalá de
Chivert, diócesis de Tortosa y la provincia de Castellón de la Plana, el 9 de
mayo de 1882. Sus padres eran D. Francisco Calduch Roures y Doña Amparo Rovira
Martí. Tuvieron cinco hijos, la última de los cuales era Isabel. Sus vecinos
dijeron de ella: "Durante su infancia vivió en un ambiente muy cristiano.
En aquel tiempo practico la caridad a los más necesitados. Ella y una amiga
llevaban alimentos a una anciana, a la que también ayudó en su higiene personal
y a la limpieza de la casa”. Durante su juventud hubo un romance con un joven
del lugar, muy cristiano, relación que finalizó para abrazar un estado de vida
más perfecto, siempre con el consentimiento de sus padres.
Entró en el Monasterio de las Capuchinas de Castellón de la Plana vistiendo el
hábito en el año 1900. Dice su hermano José: "La vocación fue la única
razón que llevó a mi hermana a entrar a religiosa". Hizo su profesión
temporal el 28 de abril de 1901 y la perpetua el 30 de mayo de 1904. Las
religiosas testimoniaron: "Era de temperamento pacífico y amable, siempre
alegre. Fue una religiosa ejemplar. Siempre contenta. Muy observante de las
Regla y Constituciones. Muy modesta, prudente en el hablar y muy mortificada.
Muy mortificada en las comidas, siempre muy estimada por la comunidad. Ella era
un alma de vida interior intensa, muy devota al Santísimo Sacramento, a la
Virgen y san Juan Bautista”.
En el monasterio desempeñó el cargo de Maestro de Novicias, "haciéndolo
con mucho celo para que fueran religiosos practicantes; sin hacer distinciones
entre las novicias”, dijo de ella Sor Micaela. Fue reelegida para otros tres años,
que no llegó a completar por el inicio de la revolución.
Al estallar la revolución la Hermana Isabel se fue a Alcalá de Chivert
(Castellón), donde tenía un hermano sacerdote, Mosén Manuel, que luego será
asesinado. Durante su estancia en su provincia se dedicó al retiro y la
oración. Fue arrestada, junto con el P. Manuel Geli, franciscano, el 13 de
abril de 1937 por un grupo de milicianos,. Llevados al Comité local de Alcalá
de Chivert fueron vejados y maltratados. Fue asesinada en el barrio de Cuevas
de Vinromá (Castellón), en cuyo cementerio también fue enterrada.

La menor de cinco
hermanos, vivió en la infancia en un ambiente muy cristiano. Durante su
juventud estuvo relacionada con un joven de la localidad, pero lo dejó para
hacerse religiosa. Ingresó en el monasterio de Clarisas Capuchinas de Castellón
de la Plana, vistiendo el hábito en 1900. Emitió la profesión simple en 1901 y
la solemne en 1904. Dicen las religiosas que era de temperamento pacífico y
amable, siempre alegre y contenta. Una religiosa ejemplar, muy apreciada por la
comunidad. En el monasterio desempeñó el cargo de maestra de novicias. Al
arreciarse la persecución religiosa en julio de 1936, sor Isabel marchó a Alcalá
de Chivert (Castellón) donde tenía un hermano sacerdote, que también sería
asesinado. Mientras permaneció en su pueblo, se dedicó al retiro y a la
oración. Allí la detuvo un grupo de milicianos el 13 de abril de 1937, junto al
padre Manuel Geli, franciscano.
Conducidos ambos al
Comité local de Alcalá de Chivert, fueron injuriados y vejados. Fue asesinada
en el término de Cuevas de Vinromá (Castellón). Contaba cincuenta y cuatro años
de edad. Sus venerados restos descansan en el monasterio de las monjas Capuchinas
de Castellón de la Plana.
También murió mártir otra
religiosa clarisa capuchina: Milagro Ortells Gimeno —Valencia, 29 de noviembre
de 1882 – Paterna (Valencia), 20 de noviembre de 1936—. Fue la tercera y última
hija del matrimonio entre Enrique y Dolores. Durante su niñez era muy devota y
el ambiente familiar en que creció era eminentemente cristiano. Con vocación a
la vida religiosa, su madre le proponía fuese Reparadora, pero no quiso aceptar
buscando la mayor estrechez de la Regla Capuchina. Entró en el monasterio de
Clarisas Capuchinas de Valencia en 1902. Allí recuerdan que cuando ingresó lo
hizo con mucho entusiasmo.
Ocupó en este convento
los cargos de enfermera, refitolera, tornera, sacristana y maestra de novicias,
desempeñando todos estos ministerios con fidelidad.
Sus hermanas religiosas
la describen como muy caritativa, ofreciéndose siempre a prestar cualquier
servicio.
Su piedad era sólida y la
característica más destacable era su amor a la Eucaristía y a la Inmaculada.
Era muy estimada por
todas las religiosas y gozaba de fama de santidad. Con la persecución religiosa
de 1936 tuvo que refugiarse en casa de su hermana, en Valencia, llevando allí
una vida de oración y recogimiento.
Luego se cobijó en una
casa de la calle Maestro Chapí, también de Valencia, donde había otras
religiosas de la Doctrina Cristiana. Allí fue detenida por un grupo de
milicianos el 20 de noviembre de 1936 y asesinada, junto a diecisiete
religiosas más de la Doctrina Cristiana, en el lugar conocido como Picadero de Paterna.
Tenía cincuenta y tres años. Exhumados sus restos, se veneran actualmente en el
monasterio de Clarisas Capuchinas de Valencia.
Las dos monjas clarisas capuchinas fueron beatificadas en Roma por el papa Juan Pablo II, el 11 de marzo de 2001.

Isabella, war das jüngste
von fünf Kindern von Francisco Calduch Roures und Donna Amparo Rovira Martí.
Sie trat 1900 ins Kloster der Kapuzinerinnen in
Castellón de la Plana ein, wo ihr liebenswürdiges Wesen, ihre Fröhlichkeit ihre
Bescheidenheit, ihre Beachtung der Regel und ihre Demut gelobt wurden. 1934 wurde
sie Novizinnenmeisterin. Nach dem Ausbruch des Spanischen
Bürgerkriegs ging sie wieder in ihren Heimatort,
wo sie am 13. April 1937 von einer Gruppe der Milizsoldaten festgenommen und
dann getötet wurde.

Josefina Calduch Rovira
va néixer a Alcalà de Xivert (Castelló de la Plana) el 9 de maig de 1882, en
una família molt religiosa. Els seus pares, per acostumar-la a les obres de
caritat, feien que fos ella mateixa qui donés almoines als pobres. Primer es va
plantejar casar-se, i va acceptar el festeig amb un jove del seu poble, però va
sentir la crida a fer-se religiosa i va trencar la relació. Va entrar en el
convent de les caputxines de Castelló l'any 1900, i va professar el 28 d'abril
de 1901 amb el nom de sor Isabel. Pacífica i amable per temperament, era una
religiosa exemplar i molt observant. Durant dos triennis va ser mestra de
novícies. Arribada la guerra, va haver de deixar el monestir i marxar al seu
poble amb el seu germà capellà. Arrestada el 13 d'abril de 1937, va ser
afusellada l'endemà a Coves de Vinromà. El seu germà també va ser afusellat més
endavant. Va ser beatificada l'11 de març de 2001.
